2nd Batch

Gamebcn, the videogame incubator of Barcelona, is kicking off its second edition. The sister incubator to Incubio, Gamebcn was created in 2014 with the aim to help transform videogame projects into consolidated companies with growth potential. The program is an initiative of Incubio, Caixa Capital Risc and the Department of Culture from the Generalitat de Catalunya, through l’Institut Català d’Empreses Culturals. It counts Barcelona Activa as a strategic partner.

The program

The first edition was a raving success, which you can read more about here. The 2015 – 2016 program will follow a similar format to the previous edition: consisting of a 6 month incubation process beginning in October 2015, followed by an acceleration program for selected qualifying teams. Gamebcn consists of a comprehensive program of professionalization; with theoretical and practical training, monitoring and support in a unique ecosystem for videogame developers. Additionally, this edition will be extended by two extra months; the additional time will help the teams to fully mature in order to make business deals with investors, publishers and more.

Training

Participating teams will receive an immense amount of training in the videogame industry, given by recognized prestigious professionals in the industry. Some of the topics covered include: videogame production, development tools, game design, metrics and analytics, growth hacking, user testing, distribution (mobile, PC, console, etc), legal, HR, administration, and financing. They will also have a specialized Public Speaking training and free English classes, as the use of English is the lingua franca in the videogame industry. They will also have access to Master Classes, similar to one given by Manel Sort from King last year.

Events & Financial Grants

The Gamebcn program also provides unfettered access to the most important events in the gaming industry, such as Game Connection Europe in October and the Game Developers Conference in March. The projects will have presence in additional events such as 4YFN, Mobile World Congress, Gamelab Mobile, and a number of other events throughout the year. These events provide golden opportunities to make serious business development with the industry, from meeting investors to making deals with publishers. There will also be a Demo Day towards the end of the program for the teams to present their hard work in front of seasoned professionals in the videogame industry, publishers and investors.

The teams selected to participate in the program will receive financial grants for the duration of the program.

Selection Process

During August 2015, they will have an open call for projects. One of the goals of Gamebcn is to help develop teams that have come from university programs, although it is open to independent teams as well. Furthermore, the program is open to international applicants, as well as Spanish teams.

In September, a Gamebcn panel will review the applications and decide which teams they will invite for an interview. They will be judging projects based on the following criteria: team, level of project´s development, innovation in gameplay, art, technology, feedback from the university (if applicable), marketing, business, monetization and personal interviews. A maximum of 10 teams will be selected to participate in the program.

The incubation program will begin on October 1st and will end in March 2016 in the mStartupBarcelona space, in the MediaTIC building. Follow Gamebcn on the social networks to stay updated on the latest developments in their program, and to discover which projects join. We can’t wait to see what this new batch will bring!
